Hey Pretty! Beauty Season Start Up Session, Roosevelt Coffee Shop, Columbus, February 2019

You guys hear a lot about Hey Pretty! Beauty on my social media accounts and on the website. And for good reason! HPB is a wonderful resource for me as a photographer and I am their staff photographer. So, when they are doing something cute, I am there for that!

The team has expanded over the past year. And because of that, Sam wanted to make sure her whole team was on the same page as their spring season amps up.

The girls met up at Roosevelt Coffee Shop Downtown, around the corner from their studio. It was pretty cold, which is expected in early February in Columbus. We got some quick shots before they headed to the the studio for the educational portion of the day.

With some professional development to get the day started, the girls also scheduled the next several months of weddings!

This team is super creative and they are all ready to provide exceptional service for your wedding, or photo shoot!

The HPB team has been featured on The Knot and has won the Best of Weddings award several years in a row!

Stephanie Winter's Wedding, Columbus, Ohio, October 2018

I don’t shoot weddings very often. In fact, I don’t even advertise myself as a wedding photographer. But when a friend asks for a favor because her father, who is a photographer, is IN the wedding, you make an exception!

blogWINTERSelocin.jpg
blogWINTERSelocin2.jpg

The wedding and reception were on the property of Stephanie’s new in-laws and it was absolutely beautiful. The ceremony was held on the family’s waterfront property and the reception took place in the tented backyard of the main house. To get from the ceremony to the reception, we passed through the property’s tree farm and took portraits! Hair and makeup were provided by Hey Pretty! Beauty.

Nissan Car Club Model Shoot- February 2018, Columbus, Ohio

MAY 2018 UPDATE: You can watch a video that Dylan made from the day on my YouTube channel, or by clicking the link directly to the behind the scenes video.

I was invited by a fellow photographer, and car enthusiast, to shoot at an annual Nissan Car Club get together photo shoot. We met in a multi-level parking garage around 4p, with daylight fading fast.

We shot with over 30 cars and 5 models between about 8 photographers. When I say it was cold, I mean it was COLD. Bundled up in my coat and scarf, I was still shivering. I can only imagine how the models felt as they wore unseasonably thin outfits for the shoot!

blogNISSANelocin.jpg

Celeste Blandon, Logan Shepard and Love Carver were the models that I worked with that day. I was also testing out using my Octabox, which was very new to me. I’m thankful that they were patient with me to nail these shots. I think it was worth it!

Gothesque Magazine "Visible" Mental Health Awareness, Columbus, Ohio photo shoot April 2018

Sam asked me if I would be interested in shooting a set for a magazine.

I am ALWAYS interested in shooting, so, of course I said yes. When she told me that this set was slated for a “Mental Health Awareness” issue called Visible, I was even more intrigued. We went with a theme of not being able to speak up for yourself, feeling like you have to stay silent. Our models, Liz and Briden, brought their own spin on the idea.

blogVISIBLEelocin.jpg

Not being able to speak up for yourself is not always literal in the auditory sense. Briden’s set was more about not being able to show your true self. Wearing a mask to “fit in” with society’s rules is another way you can be forced to “keep your mouth shut.”

blogVISIBLEelocin2.jpg

On to the technical stuff. You can see in the video below that we took a LOT of shots of the fabric throwing. It wasn’t so much that we weren’t “getting it,” but that the fabric kept giving it’s own personality that I wanted to make sure that we got lots of options. The makeup for Briden and Liz were done with the expert hand of Sam from Hey Pretty! Beauty with assistance from Liz and another Hey Pretty artist, Morgan. Dylan did our behind the scenes video. I was informed that I “move too quickly,” so my goal for future shoots is to hold my position longer so the video has some dynamic shots, too!

White Sheet Session Boudoir- Jackie, Columbus, Ohio March 2018

It may be March, but it’s getting in in here!

A white sheet session is a great way to get introduced to boudoir. You can take away the stress of picking the “perfect lingerie set” and focus on making beautiful images! Jackie was super excited to help me shoot this set to show you what you an accomplish with a simple bed set up and crisp white sheets.

The white sheet session is a great intro to boudoir because you can imply your seductive nature, while remaining as covered up as you want! We did move on to some lingerie because the furniture and setting was just perfect for that, and you would also have that option!

Using natural light and bare wood floors with exposed brick, the backdrop focuses totally on you.

A session like this could be for your partner, your portfolio, or just because you want to!

Sundown Rundown Yoga gear editorial, Scioto Mile, Columbus, Ohio, August 2017

SunDown RunDown began as a venue for small businesses to pitch their ideas and get their concepts off the ground. Since 2013, SunDown RunDown has been working to encourage the local Columbus entrepreneurship community. By hosting events at several locations around Columbus, they invite business owners to find investors, get their idea to market, and start their businesses in a legitimate way.

To help fund their Non-Profit educational ventures, they produce branded apparel. We shot some promo shots for the website in the new yoga gear available now on their website.

Brianne and Valerie modeled the logo stretch yoga leggings and roomy tank tops at the Scioto Mile in downtown Columbus Ohio.

Old Familiar Comb Company barbershop photo shoot October 2017

Old Familiar Comb Company started in 2012 as a sketch of a “bottle opening comb” on a paper napkin. After hours of design and testing, the brand has expanded to mustache combs. To carry your comb, you can get the branded leather wallet or sheath, specially designed to hold the combs. They’re made and co-designed by Aaron from River City.

We went with a greaser styling for the photo shoot we held at the Old Familiar Barbershop, from which the OFCC gets it’s name.

Kaylynn & Ted Wlodarsky Wedding at WatersEdge, Hilliard, Ohio October 2017

I don’t typically photograph live weddings anymore. However, when a model I’ve worked with before has a really cool theme and you know it’s going to be uniquely beautiful, you make an exception! Kaylynn is an exceptional artist and model and, together with her now-husband Ted who is a chef, she put together a Steam Punk styled wedding at WatersEdge in Hilliard. From the table decoration, to the steam punk goggles for the groom, every detail was thought of!

With pink tones and vintage books & bottles table decor, this wedding was a very cohesively decorated affair at the waterside event space. The simple, but beautiful, ceremony location was wonderfully shaded and lent a great backdrop for the post-ceremony portraits.

blogWldweddingelocin2.jpg

The Wlodarsky’s even arranged for a family member’s vintage car to be at the location after the ceremony to pose as a prop for bridal portraits!

Cake Smash photo shoots aren't just for kids! Sam Antics Birthday September 2017, Columbus, Ohio.

We’ve all seen the “1st Birthday Cake Smash” photo shoots. They sure are cute, but why should babies and toddlers have all the fun? It’s a simple formula; interest board, balloons, cake, and for the adults- bubbly! Whether you’re turning 1 or 31, cake smashes are a fun way to memorialize your birthday. It’s actually a fun shoot for any age!

samcollage1.jpg

My friend, Sam Antics of Hello Pretty! Beauty, wanted to show off her styling skills with a cake smash photo shoot for her birthday. A fun outfit and a chalkboard with all of her interests are rounded out by a bottle of bubbly and a hand decorated cake!

Sam is an amazing shoot stylist. She shopped around for a cake at local grocery stores, but couldn’t find anything she liked. So, she got creative and removed the decor from the cake and added her own! Adding color coordinating accessories like balloons, glitter and backdrop, we shot this set in a park near her house before she was whisked away to do her hair and makeup thing for a wedding.

samcollage3.jpg

This was a really fun shoot to get out of the box and work on a concept with a friend! We only got a few weird looks from passersby in the park, but it was totally worth it!

Dominick Senior session at the Idea Foundry in Franklinton, Columbus Ohio Class of 2018

Dominick is an aspiring music producer who was not too keen on getting his photo taken, at first. But once he saw the first shot, he was game to make this the best experience! His mom was super pumped at seeing the back of my camera between shots, but she was even more excited once I delivered the edited images.

This was my first time shooting at my day job, so we did it on a Sunday when there would be less coworkers in the building. Oddly enough, we still managed to run into a coworker who is also in the music business!

Grimm Family portraits at Innis Wood Metro Gardens, Westerville, Ohio August 2017

Even though I focus mainly on individual conceptual portraiture, family portraits are a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with clients as well!

The Grimm Family gathered at the Innis Wood Metro Gardens for their family portraits this year! While initially hesitant to get their portraits taken, we quickly got excited about the images on the back on my camera! With the promise of their first portrait update in a few years, each member of the family was ready to have those “shareable” images.

GRIMMelocinBLOG.jpg

Regardless of the season, Innis Wood Metro Park is great for informal family portraits and it provides multiple location backdrops. While the park itself is not pet friendly, there is a section of the parking lot that is pretty photogenic. That’s where we shot Brandon’s individual portraits with his pup!

Preview of AFW "Runway No.5" at Commons Studio "The Camera Social."

This year is a big milestone year for Alternative Fashion Mobs's annual Alternative Fashion Week. This year is year number five with a show aptly receiving the moniker "Runway No.5." To amp up for the multi-day event, in collaboration with the inaugural session of The Camera Social held on May 27th, 2017 (hosted by Commons Studio), local photographers, models, hair & makeup professionals, and members of the fashion industry at large were invited to preview some of the Alternative Fashion Week designers. I was more than excited to be one of those photographers.

While I tend to model for the AFW show instead of shooting, it was a nice change of pace for me to get to work in the fully equipped studio space at Commons Studio at this first time collaboration. Shooting in an open space studio complete with tunes by DJ Donnie Mossman of Damn Girl and libations provided by 451 Spirits and Pabst Blue Ribbon , we had an audience of fashion industry onlookers, the designers themselves, and other hair & makeup/photographer/model professionals.

I was personally brought out of my comfort zone with such a large group of people and there not being a fully "scheduled" group shoot environment. I appreciate the open atmosphere and the general sense of collaboration, though, and feel like it helped me actually focus more on my lighting and model interaction.

While I did not have the pleasure of working with all of the models or individual designs, I am pleased with the connections I made and the images I did come out with. I tried some new lighting and editing techniques and certainly met some new connections in the industry.

I also shot one of the models, Thomas Price, after many of the others had left and I am really glad I did! He and I shot some edgy extensions of the shots we got earlier in the evening.

The Alternative Fashion Week event is actually several events spanning a whole month. These events range from July 8ths Runway No.5 being held at Newport Music Hall (Tickets)* to August 5ths Next Gen Designer Youth Fair. The fashion events are a mix of free and ticketed events and information can be found here. There is even an option to round up your tickets to make an additional donation. This year is special because AFM is working on funding a physical Fabric facility, to help local designers in the industry and make Columbus even more of a Fashion City!
